There are many varieties of corn, some of which are particularly sweet and sugary. There are also very decorative and fun varieties, such as 'Harlequin' corn or 'Strawberry' corn. The first has an ear studded with colored grains that look like precious gems, while the second has a small red cob that looks very much like a large strawberry.

The cultivation of corn does not require special knowledge, just follow some recommendations. In this regard we will illustrate you how to grow corn giving you all the necessary information.

How to grow corn, sowing
Maize or corn grows well anywhere, however it prefers light, fertile, well-drained soils. Panicles need sun to mature, while plants that grow in height prefer locations sheltered from strong winds.
Corn can be sown indoors in seedbeds in early spring or directly in the garden in April or even in May depending on the region and altitude in which we live.

  • In the seedbed

The seeds should be placed in cellular containers or in small jars 2.5-3 cm deep, making sure that the temperatures of the place do not drop below 20 °. For further information on sowing in seedbeds, we recommend reading the article "Sowing in seedbeds"

  • In the open ground

For sowing in the open ground it might be useful to warm the soil before sowing, covering it for a few days with a cloth, if the temperatures were still not high enough. The seeds should be placed in square flower beds, rather than in a single row, because sweet corn pollinates with the wind and needs the proximity of other plants of the same species. A grain should be placed every 30-40 cm at about 2.5-3.5 cm deep. Between row and row must be left at least 60 cm distance. The seed then needs to be covered with a little soil.

How to grow corn, transplant
The young seedlings should be transplanted when they have reached a height of about 8 cm. At this point, acclimatization must be practiced, that is, keeping the seedlings outdoors for a few days before transplanting to ensure that they adapt to the external climatic conditions. Once this is done it will be possible to transplant the seedlings at a distance of about 35-45 cm.

How to grow corn, irrigation and harvest

  • Irrigation

Unless there are particular periods of drought, the corn should be watered when the plants begin to bloom and especially when the cobs begin to swell.

  • Collected

When the cob is large and turgid, engrave with a fingernail the grains that appear under the leaves, if the liquid that comes out is watery it means that the cob is still too unripe, if it is whitish it means that it is ready to be cooked. If, on the other hand, we want to collect it to preserve the dry grains and reduce them into flour, we will have to wait for the beards to be brown and the dry leaves to crackle just touching them!
